Dear Mr. Raines

I see from the NY Times Editorial "The Disappearing Hebron Deal" (1/4/97) that "a crazed Israeli solider" shot at Palestinians." I see that the Times elects not to mention that the soldier in question is clearly a Jew. That is fine.

I do wonder why the Times consistently adds the word MUSLIM or Islamic whenever it reports or writes about the actions of some similar crazed Algerian or Iranian. For example, when an UNKOWN Algerian terrorit explodes a bomb and kills 20 KNOWN Muslim Algerian people the Times' news coverage reports that ISLAMIC TERRORISTS KILL 20 ALGERIANS.

The unkown criminal is declared Muslim but known Muslim victims become secular in your reporting. Your paper's coverage is begining to sound deliberately slanderous of Muslims. Is religion bashing reserved only for Islam and Muslims?

I hope the Times will stick to a consistent policy when reporting on the religions of perpetrators of crimes or terrorits acts.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely

Imran Anwar

PS I am adding to this note on 2/15/97 because you are contiuing this unilateral abuse of Muslims in your columns. Several times in the last few days you have reported about Algeria and done what I complain about above. During this same week the IRA's murder of a British soldier has not called it CATHOLIC TERRORISM. Why the continuing Hypocrisy Mr. Raines?

TWO Years have passed but the Islam bashing by the New York Times continues. 1/3/1999.
